Mattel is adding to its inclusive offerings by launching colorblind accessible versions of several color-based games. This includes UNO and numerous UNO variants, Tumblin’ Monkeys, Blokus, Skip-Bo, and Phase 10. According to the company, 80% of its gaming portfolio will be colorblind accessible by the end of the year, increasing to 90% by the end of next year.
To make the games more inclusive, Mattel partnered with experts in the color vision deficiency field and worked with players who are colorblind. This expansion follows the release of UNO ColorADD in 2017, which was designed for the colorblind community.

The new versions of the games will feature patterns, tactile clues, and symbols for players to use while differentiating cards. Mobile versions of games like UNO, Phase 10, and Skip-Bo will include colorblind identification as well. Mobile decks will feature symbols and shapes for players to identify instead of colors. Players must enable the “Beyond Colors” update in their personal account settings, which can be accessed via card deck options.
“At Mattel, we are proud that our portfolio of games continues to bring people together — transcending languages and cultures — and this initiative to offer more colorblind accessible games is another proof point on our inclusivity journey,” says Ray Adler, Vice President, Global Head of Games at Mattel. “We’re proud to help spread awareness for the colorblind community and make our products accessible for more people, so that all fans can come together and enjoy universal gameplay.”
This coincides with Mattel Play It Forward Global Volunteer Week, which runs from June 24-28. During Play It Forward, employees share their time and talents with local nonprofits. This year, Mattel Games will donate GIANT UNO decks and Tumblin’ Monkeys games, featuring colorblind accessible features, to kids who attend activations at Mattel headquarters. Mattel will also donate colorblind accessible games to certain YMCA summer camps this season in an effort to support inclusive play.
“Mattel is committed to designing products that better reflect the world today and create positive social impact. This includes bringing more representative and inclusive products to market across Mattel brands,” says Mason Williams, Global Head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Mattel.
