In 1995, Casio launched their Pro Trek line with the DPX-500 (a topic briefly discussed in my previous article about the Casio MW-43). Thirty years later, they’re still one of the best bang-for-buck options available when it comes to rugged, reliable timekeeping. A brand synonymous with the outdoors––and the many physically demanding activities associated with it––Pro Trek has announced the release of new versions of their most eco-friendly timepiece: the PRG-340.

The central focus of this new model is its strong emphasis on sustainability and functionality. The case is crafted of bio-based resin and its cloth band is made of CASTLON, a rather novel material manufactured using 100% plant-derived Nylon 11 fiber produced with the oil of castor plants. Not only carbon-neutral and treated with a fire-retardant finish, these CASTLON bands claim to be more chemical resistant, wear resistant, and flexible at low temperatures compared to their conventional Nylon 6 counterparts. There are two different variants of the PRG-340, one with an Olive Green case and CASTLON band (PRG340B-3) and the other with a Coyote Brown case and faux leather band (PRG340L-5). These two options are quite versatile and will match most any outdoor gear typically worn on hikes and other outdoor adventures.

From an aesthetics perspective, the PRG-340 is reminiscent of other Pro Trek models released by Casio but does a good job separating itself with its duplex LCD display and bi-directional rotating bezel. The vast majority of Pro Trek models are on the larger end of the watch dimension scale, and the PRG-340 is no different with its roughly 52mm case size. That being said, however, the larger dimensions are important to ensuring proper visibility when utilizing the watch’s many functions and are a small caveat to pay for the advanced technology on offer. Employing the use of a Tough Solar movement and packed with an altimeter/barometer, digital compass, and thermometer, the PRG-340 positions itself as both a helpful and dependable outdoor tool. Other features include a countdown timer, fully automatic LED super illuminator backlight system, sunrise/sunset data, 5 daily alarms and world time functionality with 48 cities and UTC included.

In a time seemingly fraught with environmental destruction and disasters, there’s simply no better time for Casio to release the PRG-340. A lightweight, hi-tech timepiece in a sustainable and eco-friendly package, combined with its reliable Tough Solar movement and improved duplex LCD display, this watch is a great outdoor companion to add to any nature enthusiast’s arsenal. The Pro Trek PRG-340 is now available on Casio’s website, with the Olive Green variant (PRG340B-3) retailing for $260 USD and the Coyote Brown variant (PRG340L-5) retailing for $250 USD. Casio
