Comic-Con International (SDCC) is setting sail for Málaga, Spain.
Through an agreement facilitated by IMG Licensing, the acclaimed event is traveling outside the U.S. for the first time. A European debut is slated for September.
“We’re very excited to celebrate comics and the popular arts and share Comic-Con’s unique spirit with audiences in Europe. We couldn’t have found a more vibrant, welcoming, and creative city to begin this exciting new chapter for fans and creators,” said David Glanzer, Chief Communications & Strategy Officer of San Diego Comic Convention. The announcement was made at an event presented by actor, director, and screenwriter Santiago Segura; Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, President of the Junta de Andalucía; Francisco de la Torre Prados, the Mayor of Málaga; and Jaime López-Francos, CEO of DENTSU Spain & Portugal were also present.
The Junta de Andalucía and the Málaga City Council are committed to making the city the European capital of popular arts. “For the Andalusian government, supporting this event means solidifying Andalusia as a reference in digital art and pop culture, backed by the most powerful gathering of talent,” Moreno Bonilla said. “…I am confident that the expansion of San Diego Comic-Con to Málaga will be a total success after these three years, also thanks to the support of the network of professionals and local businesses participating in the event.”
In addition to special guests, the announcement included the display of The Infinity Gauntlet. Inspired by the artifact from Avengers: Infinity War, the collectible is designed by Gentle Giant and crafted by Adam Mirzoeff. It features six gemstones, known as the Infinity Collection of Gemstones. The Infinity Gauntlet has more than 150 carats and costs more than $25 million. It was presented at SDCC 2022; SDCC sees the display as a symbolic continuation of the convention’s legacy in Spain.
The Con will be held Sept. 25-28. Guests, events, activations, and information about tickets will be announced soon. To learn more, visit sandiegocomicconmalaga.com.
