The Blue Blur is making history, again.
Sonic the Hedgehog, SEGA’s beloved video game character, returns to the big screen with a huge boom. Paramount Pictures happily revealed that the third film installment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released last month, has garnered $100 million internationally and $187 million domestically, for a grand total of more than $312 million thus far.
The success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 brings the franchise total to more than $1 billion worldwide.
Prior installments of the film franchise garnered $725.2 million at the global box office, alongside $181 million from consumer spending on home video, streaming, and rentals. Coupled with spin-off shows such as Knuckles on Paramount+, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise continues to thrive.
The third film focuses on the team of Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails and their fight against Shadow, a mysterious and incredibly powerful villain voiced by series newcomer Keanu Reeves.
Derived from the iconic SEGA video game, Sonic the Hedgehog attracts a wide variety of audiences, from kids to adults, who ran to the box office this holiday season to catch the film.
Sonic also powers sales in the toy and game aisle.
JAKKS Pacific and PMI Kids’ World are among the licensees offering a wide selection of toys based on the Sonic property, including action figures, plushes, and more. JAKKS’ Sonic the Hedgehog 3 line is available at retail now.
Expect more Sonic tie-ins to emerge as the international toy fair season gets underway.
