Update: It's nearly time for the new "El Grito" colorway of the Air Jordan 5, which we covered initially below back in July, to land on shelves. The pair includes all of its Mexican-themed detailing that we noted previously and arrives in a special box that Jordan Brand assembled for the release. It remains anticipated to drop on September 7 via Nike SNKRS and select retailers at a starting price of $225 USD.
Original Story: Jordan Brand has tapped Mexico City as the home base of its LATAM operations with the recent opening of an enormous flagship in the city. Now, shortly after the store opened its doors for the first time earlier this week, we've been provided with a special release that's packed full of Mexican pride: the patriotic Air Jordan 5 "El Grito."
The shoe's moniker draws from a key piece of Mexican history: a call to action for Mexico to rise against the Spanish crown from Father Miguel Higaldo, the leader of the Mexican War of Independence, who's widely regarded as the "father" of the nation. However, @richmd87, who revealed a first look at the shoe, claims that it's "not" inspired by independence (despite what its name implies) but instead, the more abstract concept of "the pride of Mexican diversity through mysticism, culture, and traditions." (It should be noted that neither Nike or Jordan Brand has announced any official info about the shoe's exact inspiration at the time of writing).
Marketing fluff and buzzwords aside, the "El Grito" is loaded with special details to bolster its white, green, orange and maroon color scheme. The full white leather upper boasts special embossed details inspired by traditional Mexican patterns on its heel, tongue and mudguard alike, while the midfoot's netting is leather as well instead of its standard plastic. A finishing touch is provided by Air Force 1-style lace deubres, one of which reads "Viva" and the other of which, though not pictured, likely reads "Mexico."
Expect the Air Jordan 5 "El Grito" to release on September 7 and retail for $225 USD.
